We recently met with the founder of Surfholidays.com Nicky Kelly, the creator of a very interesting website for all surfing enthusiasts… where you can find and book a holiday in the best Surf destinations around the world.
The site includes our beloved Fuerteventura, an island well known by surfers and those who practice all kinds of water sports.
Let’s find out more through a few questions.
How does the Surfholidays.com site work?
Through the site, people can book accommodation and lessons in the best surf cities around the world.
On the page you can search in different cities and towns and find the perfect place depending on how you want to surf, places to learn or those for more experienced surfers.
For each accommodation and surf school there are reviews made by guests so people can read and find out what the holiday can be like for each place.
What can be found on your website?
People can book accommodation and surf lessons in over 50 places around the surfing world.
Europe is very popular, especially Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Portugal and southwestern France.
We also have a ‘Surf Trip Finder‘ that helps you choose the best place to go according to your ability and the best time of year.
We have a blog that we keep constantly updated with guides, tips and useful information from the world of surfing.
Who are the members of the SURF HOLIDAY.com team?
We are a group of surfers from all over Europe.
We have our headquarters in Dublin and a support office in London.
The company was founded by me and my co-founder Darryn.
I am Irish and have been a surfer for 20 years.
Darryn is our CTO and leads the team that updates our website.
He comes from East London, one of the best surf sites in South Africa.
Francisco (Paco) Molina is our “Lead Developer” and is from Alicante.
He is new to surfing, but he is learning very quickly.
Jules is also from Dublin and takes care of all our accommodation facilities and surf schools.
Then we also have Mark, Cian and Francesca in the “Sales & Marketing” department in the team.
Why did this idea of the site come about?
It all started in 2009.
We had a very hard time finding out which surf areas we could go to and which ones were the best for our abilities.
We also found it difficult to identify the best accommodation to stay and the best surf schools to choose from.
So we thought of a solution to the problem and the idea was born, we created Surfholidays.com.
On your website there is an interesting guide for those who go surfing in Fuerteventura, with a lot of valuable information, can you tell us something more?
We try to give as much information as possible about each area so people can make the right choice about where to go.
Our guide “Surf Guide to Fuerteventura” is an introduction to the island, for people who have never been there before.
You can find details on when to go, where to surf for beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers.
It also explains the best way to get around the island, where to “eat and drink” and the list of the best 5 things to do when you can’t surf!
Why do surfers choose Fuerteventura as a place to surf?
People come to surf in Fuerteventura for a variety of reasons.
The island receives a large amount of swell allowing for consistency for surfing.
It has therefore been called the Hawaii of Europe.
The waves that are created are a mix of fast and powerful waves for those who are advanced but also softer waves for those who want to learn.
Another reason for its popularity is the warm water and the fantastic climate and all year round full of sunshine.
For these reasons and the friendliness of the locals, Fuerteventura is one of the favorite destinations among surfers.
When are the best times to surf in Fuerteventura?
Usually in winter, from November to March is very popular, because people from Northern Europe want to escape the cold and surf in warm waters!
For advanced surfers this is the best time because the waves are stronger and more powerful.
In summer, the waves are less powerful, so this is the ideal time for beginners.
Are you collaborating with other websites?
We have a lot of partners and friends from the surf industry that we collaborate with, in different projects, throughout the year.
What are your plans for the future?
Our plans are to continue to increase our destinations, surf cities outside of Europe, such as Costa Rica, Barbados, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Although Fuerteventura will always be one of our favorite places!
