La Oliva is one of the six municipalities of the island of Fuerteventura. The name "Corralejo" comes from two words "corral" and "lejo" which means "The corral farthest." The Corral is a fence where livestock is kept.
Corralejo is an old fishing village, there is the old town, called "casco viejo" where lived "majoreros" (name of Fuerteventura's population) and a modern town built from the '70s.
In 1969 was inaugurated the new airport in the island, just 5 km from Puerto Rosario. This replaced the military airport of Tefia.
In 1973 began international flights from Fuerteventura, flights would increase year after year. Therefore, a complete renovation of the facilities became necessary in 1992.
By 1994 started the extension works including a new passenger terminal, expansion of the aircraft apron, a power plant and a new access road.
The construction of this airport increased visitors across the island, particularly in Corralejo, which began to grow and increase population, shops, houses, Commercial and tourist activities.
Corralejo can be divided into these main areas:
- The area "Bristol" in the far north, by the name of the hotel that takes many years in Corralejo, is a residential area with a beautiful and long promenade that reaches the port.
- The city center, which is bounded by two streets north-south direction: the "main street" Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Avenida Juan Carlos I ° and includes the Old Town ("Casco Viejo"), with the "Plaza de La Musica" (music square), "Calle La Iglesia" and "Muelle Chico" (little pier) where many bars and restaurants. In the center of Corralejo, there are many short streets with shops, bars, restaurants and services of all kinds. Here also are the shopping centers Menara, La Plaza, The Atlantic and Las Palmeras. Atlantico Sol shopping center is also a good place for nightlife, with many bars and clubs.. Following the main street to the south there is a large water park "Aqua" open from spring to fall.
- The southeast, with the commercial center El Campanario, where many shops, bars and a supermarket. Twice a week comes a craft market and live spanish music performances. Continuing further east you get to a residential area with villas, apartments and the Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahia Real
- In the south of Corralejo there are two residencial complex, "Papagayo" and "Tamarindo", also surrounded by some shops and bars. Finally, the southern end, the residential area of the "Parque Natural", with many houses, a few shops and a large supermarket.
In Corralejo you can practice all kinds of water sports. You can even rent any type of transport, bike, motorcycle, quad, buggy, car, skate, boats. There are many beaches nearby the city and just in a few minutes you can reach the beaches in the natural park (Corralejo Grandes Playas), or maybe, heading west to the beautiful beaches of El Cotillo and many other lovely places.
In some streets and in many bars and clubs of Corralejo you can find live music at night.
The most important holidays in La Oliva are held in February in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria. During Carnival there are celebrations that last one week, and Saturday is done a great masked parade on the main street. Also noteworthy in this county: "Fiestas del Carmen" in Corralejo, with its corresponding pilgrimage and festival in honor of "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores" and St. Michael the Archangel held in La Caldereta in late September and early October, among others.
