Sun, sea and…murder in Fuerteventura!

Don’t panic!
All is still well in the island of Fuerteventura. That is the tagline of Syl Waters’ latest novel ‘Who Killed Patrick?’

‘Who Killed Patrick?’ is a cozy, murder mystery set in Corralejo, Fuerteventura. It follows the heroine Tarah, who moves from the UK to start a new life in Fuerteventura. But little does she know, her boss Jorge, will do anything to protect his holiday apartment reputation – and that includes tasking his new employee along with her pet guinea pig, Mr Bob, to track down the killer. Luckily, true to its genre, there’s very little blood, but plenty of action and lots of island descriptions.

Syl Waters says, ‘I’ve been visiting Fuerteventura for 25 years and I’m delighted to be able to set my new novel here. The idea came about last year when I was here on holiday and so I’m really happy to make this available to readers. When I was writing, I was here in Corralejo, and I think you can feel that through the writing and descriptions of our wonderful island.’

Syl had planned to be in Corralejo for the publication day of her book on 22nd August, but unfortunately the current situation means that’s not possible.

‘I was very disappointed to realise I couldn’t be in Fuerteventura for the publication day of ‘Who Killed Patrick?’ because it’s a special book baby day. But the wonder of books is that even if you’re not in a place, the writing can make you feel you are here. I hope readers will find some small consolation in my book and be able to get their Fuerteventura fix!’

‘I think many tourists will be able to recognise some of the places and streets I write about. I love Fuerteventura so much and find it a very inspirational place to be and to write. This year more than any, I (along with many others), have missed having the special energy the island brings. I was lucky enough to have visited in February this year and hope to return again soon.’

When asked why she has a guinea pig as her main character’s assistant, Syl replies, ‘I absolutely adore guinea pigs and to be able to write about the island I love and include a guinea pig as a key part of the adventure, was an absolute pleasure. I wanted to write a book that was light, fun, full of sunshine, involve the reader in a bit of a guessing game and would be (ideally) read on the beach. As it is, that may not be the case, so hopefully “Who Killed Patrick?” can transport readers to a fun, sunshine place where they can forget their worries for a short while and instead focus on solving the mystery.’

‘Who Killed Patrick’ by Syl Waters will be published on 22 August.
