This event marked the effective start of the autonomy of the islands, enshrined in the Statute of Autonomy of 1982, and represents a key moment in the democratic history of the Canary Islands.

But the history of the archipelago has its roots much further back: the Canary Islands were already inhabited in pre-Hispanic times by the Guanches, a people of Berber origin with pastoral and spiritual traditions, then conquered in the fifteenth century by the Crown of Castile. Over time, the islands became a crossroads between Europe, Africa and America, enriching themselves with cultural and linguistic influences that today form the heart of the Canarian identity.

Día de Canarias 2025: current events and significance

In 2025, the Día de Canarias is not only a celebration of the past: it is also an opportunity to reflect on the present. The Government of the Canary Islands has dedicated the theme of the year to the balance between tradition and innovation, with a programme full of cultural events, educational activities and the enhancement of local crafts and flavours.

In Fuerteventura, the focus is also on <strong
