Lobos is a small intact islet of about 4.5 km² located northeast of Fuerteventura, separated by the Bocaina, a strait whose depth does not exceed 30 meters. This natural paradise is easily accessible from Corralejo.

Why is it called Isla de Lobos?

The island’s name comes from the monk seals, also known as “sea wolves,” that once populated its shores. Unfortunately, these species are now in danger of extinction. Fishermen eliminated seals from the island, fearing that their high voracity – with a daily requirement of 30-40 kg of fish per animal – could reduce local marine resources. Despite the setbacks, efforts are underway to reintroduce these fascinating creatures to the island, while also raising awareness among fishermen about the importance of biodiversity.

How to get to Lobos Island

The Isla de Lobos is easily accessible from the port of Corralejo, in Fuerteventura. There are a number of ferries available that run daily, with a journey time of about 15-20 minutes. For those who prefer a more personalized experience, it is possible to rent water taxis, dinghies or small private boats, ideal for groups or for those who want more flexibility in schedules.

In addition, many organized excursions include activities such as snorkeling, paddle surfing, or guided tours. To book ferry tickets or an excursion, it is recommended to do so in advance, especially during the high season, as the number of daily visitors is limited to protect the island’s ecosystem.

What to see on the Isla de Lobos

The entire island is a protected natural park, with incredible biodiversity. Here are some of the main attractions:

Playa de la Concha (or La Caletta): A lovely beach with light sand and calm waters, ideal for relaxing and snorkelling.

La Caldera: A small volcano 127 meters high, which offers spectacular panoramic views and is a favorite destination for trekking.

Flora and fauna: The island is home to over 130 species of plants, many of which are endemic, and numerous species of birds, including the silver gaviota, the avutarda and the pardela cenicienta. The biological richness is extraordinary for an island of this size.

Seabed: Part of the underwater reserve area, the island’s seabed is an ecological treasure trove for divers and marine biology enthusiasts. The crystal clear waters make underwater exploration an unforgettable experience.

A bit of history

In 1963, the island was purchased by entrepreneur Rudy Meyer Asensio as private property, but was sold a few years before being declared part of the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in 1982. Since then, the island has been protected and any construction is prohibited.

Until 1968, the island was inhabited by Antonio Hernández Páez, known as “Antoñito el Farero”, who took care of the local lighthouse. Today, the lighthouse has been automated, but its history is still alive in local tales. Antoñito’s descendants still run the only restaurant on the island, where you can enjoy simple dishes based on fresh fish.

Island activities

The island is frequented by tourists, swimmers, divers and surfers. The latter appreciate the high-quality waves found at the foot of La Caldera, a true paradise for surfers.

For those looking for a relaxing day, Playa de la Concha offers a tranquil setting, while hiking enthusiasts can explore the trails that crisscross the island, including those leading to the summit of La Caldera.

Plan Your Visit

To visit the island, you need to get a free permit online, as the number of daily visitors is regulated to protect the ecosystem. Bring water, food, and everything you need for a day out in nature, as there are no shops on the island.

Remember to respect the rules of the natural park: do not leave rubbish, do not pick plants and do not disturb the animals. This small gesture helps preserve the uniqueness of Isla de Lobos for future generations.

How to Get There

Lobos Island

The island of Lobos is a unique nature reserve, located just a few kilometers off the coast of Fuerteventura.
