The Lobos Island (La Isla De Lobos)

Hello everyone!
My name is Manola, even if for friends I have always been “La Lolla”.
An Italian journalist with a passion for travel, for six years I have decided to make a clear change in my life, leaving behind the chaos and stress of the metropolis to move to the wonderful island of Fuerteventura.
Here I mainly deal with tourism, even if writing always remains my faithful ally, as well as an excellent means with which I like to “travel” with the imagination even those who, for various reasons, cannot do it in reality.

Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura So it doesn’t matter where you are right now, whether on the sofa at home or in your office; today I will take you with me on a wonderful virtual journey to discover a small pearl of our Archipelago: the Island of Lobos.
Are you ready then?
Because let’s go!
To reach this atoll, which has been declared a nature reserve since 1982 and is just under 5 km large, you have to embark from the port of Corralejo.
The more adventurous can opt for the fast and snappy “taxi-boats”, while the more traditional will have at their disposal the classic and reassuring ferry that in 15 minutes will cover the scarce two kilometers of distance that divide “Punta de Tivas” (southeast of Corralejo) from Lobos. Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura In order to avoid an excessively massive type of tourism, access to the island has been limited for some time, so in order not to risk being left on land, I recommend that you plan your excursion at least 3 days in advance and inquire with the port authorities about the daily accesses allowed.
Once you have received all the directions, all you have to do is fill a small backpack with sunscreen, a snorkel mask, a good camera lens, water, snacks and a nice pair of comfortable shoes.
Because the island, in addition to offering strips of pristine sand where you can bask in the sun, also offers absolutely unmissable paths and views from above. Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura Before I forget, do you know where the island comes its name?
Nothing less than from its first and now extinct inhabitants, or the marine “lions” (in Spanish, “lobos”) that once populated its coasts in large quantities.

So, have you taken everything?
Disembarking at the small pier of Lobos you will find yourself in front of a landscape as incredible as it is varied.
An incredible mix of colors ranging from the crystalline blue of its waters, to the whiteness of its beaches, from the green-orange of its sun-kissed vegetation, to the brown of its rocky paths.
Where do you prefer to start our hike?
The island is in fact crossed by a circular path that can be traveled both clockwise and counterclockwise.
To overcome the heat and give the body the right “sprint”, I would immediately opt for a visit to “El Puertito”.
There is nothing more energizing than a nice dip in the cool and crystal clear waters of these natural pools! Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura What do you say?
Now would you like to relax a bit under the sun and maybe take some heavenly photos to send to colleagues left in the city?
Said and done!
The beach of “La Concha”, a strip of white beach surrounded by shallow aquamarine waters and ideal for snorkeling, is the ideal place.
You will see what magnificent shots! Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura Now that the batteries have been recharged, it is time to get going.
The next stop, before reaching the “Montaña de la Caldera” or the highest point of the island, are the “Marrajo Salt Pans”.
These salt pans date back to the middle of the last century, but they were never finished because in those years new ways of preserving food were born and the demand for salt was soon exhausted. Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura Are you ready now for our little climbing on the “Montaña de la Caldera”?? Don’t make that face, reaching the top is a feat really within everyone’s reach and I assure you that the view you can enjoy from up there repays all the effort! Fuerteventura and Lanzarote seen from above are so close that they seem to touch each other! And what about the panorama offered by the beautiful and wild dunes of Corralejo ?!? This hill is nothing more than a volcanic cone attacked by the constant force of the Ocean and reduced today to a crater in the shape of a circular amphitheater. Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura It’s time to get off!
Because there are still a couple of things that are absolutely unmissable: the “Faro del Martiño” and “Jable de la Cocina”.
The lighthouse of Lobos was built around the middle of the nineteenth century and was the first permanent residence on the island.
It was inhabited until 1968, after which it was automated.
The last stop before returning to the pier is “Jable de la Cocina”, a sandy esplanade of absolute beauty.
Here, the pale sand radiates the surrounding landscape with a golden hue, characterized by mounds covered with the vegetation typical of this coastal area.
Our virtual tour on Lobos Island is over!
I really hope you enjoyed it and that you will soon have the opportunity to visit this little natural paradise firsthand, because you will surely be enraptured!
See you at the next stop! by: Manola Mancuso photo by: Matteo Ferrini Isla de Lobos, Corralejo, Fuerteventura
