Discovering the Calderón Hondo: a journey through the volcanoes of Fuerteventura

Climbing to the top of this volcano is a unique experience, suitable for everyone, and will allow you to immerse yourself in the history and nature of Fuerteventura.

A volcano steeped in history

These volcanoes were formed about 50,000 years ago, increasing the surface area of the island and bringing it closer to Lanzarote. In the process, the neighboring island of Lobos was also born. The Calderón Hondo is one of the best-preserved volcanoes, with a crater that reaches a height of 278 meters.

How to Get There

To get to the Calderón Hondo, follow the road from Corralejo to Lajares. Just before entering the village, you will find a roundabout near the Campo Municipal de Fútbol in Lajares. Take the first exit on the right toward Majanicho.

After less than a kilometre, you will find a parking space on the right, at the foot of the volcanoes. From there, the journey to the summit begins.

The route: simple and for everyone

The path that leads to the crater is simple and well marked, with stones lined up along almost the entire route. In about 45 minutes on foot, you will reach the top, where you will find a small mirador to admire the reddish crater and the surrounding panorama.

  • The surroundings of the north of Fuerteventura, including El Cotillo, Majanicho, Lajares and even Lanzarote.

For the more experienced, it is possible to walk along the crater rim, but very carefully.

Encounter with local wildlife

At the top of the volcano, you will be able to meet the friendly ardillas (squirrels typical of the island), which often approach visitors in search of food. In addition, you may spot birds of prey, large black crows , and even goats grazing on the crater rims.
