More than two kilometers of beautiful white sand beaches…
Closing day:
El Cotillo is a quiet fishing village dedicated to the Virgin of “buen viaje” (good trip). There is a painted written dedicated to Her on the cliff in the old harbour.
As you arrive, you’ll find yourself in the center of El Cotillo, near the old harbour where most of pubs and restaurants are. There are many good bars and restaurants, some shops and a lot of surf schools. Looking southward you can see the Tostón fortress (in spanish: ‘El castillo del Tostón’), an ancient structure used as a watchtower for enemy ships.
El Cotillo has become a tourist place and a top destination for water sports lovers, such as surf, windsurf and kitesurf, due to the constant wind and optimal waves. Last but not least, its beautiful beaches attract many tourists and nature lovers.

Heading south you can reach the beach of Castillo and going further, the wild and desert beaches of ‘Ajibe’, ‘La Cueva’ and ‘del Aguila’. Yellow sand dominated by a black cliff along the entire coast, lashed by constant waves, perfect for surfing. All these beach can be easily reached following a dirt road, better you if drive an off-road vehicle. Anyway you can use a normal car, just go slowly and pay attention to large stones and deep holes.
Instead of going south, you can direct northward to explore the beaches of ‘Los Lagos’, near the Lighthouse, beautiful lagoons of white sand that form small beaches called pools. The road to the lighthouse is perfectly paved, then it becomes a dirt road. You can even go back to Corralejo following this dirt road (be careful: if you drive a rental car the company will not cover off-road breakdowns).
Many beaches are accessible only walking, you have to park your car and take a short walk to reach them. There are many places suitable for naturists looking for tranquility and peace.
It is always a good idea to bring some food and water if you want to stay on the beach for a long time, as there is nothing nearby.
Maybe you could stop and eat in the delicious restaurants with exceptional panoramic views.
Remember that the sun beats down hard, but the wind mitigates a lot, so you don’t notice the heat, but it burns you. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella and always use protective creams.
El cotillo is also the right place to see an amazing sunset, if you are nearby and the Sun is about to set, we suggest you to stop and enjoy the show.
