Montaña Roja Fuerteventura

La Montaña Roja: a natural treasure in Fuerteventura

The Montaña Roja is one of the most fascinating natural wonders of Fuerteventura, a volcanic cone that rises majestically within the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. With a height of 312 meters, it welcomes visitors with its striking reddish hues, which stand out against the blue sky, offering a breathtaking view already along the road of the Dunes, before arriving in Corralejo.

A Trail for Adventure Lovers

The main trail to the summit of Montaña Roja starts from Villaverde and is about 8 kilometers long. This route, which is challenging especially downhill, is suitable for more experienced hikers. However, the effort is amply rewarded by the beauty of the panorama that opens up along the entire route.

Those who decide to take on this challenge in the early hours of the morning can enjoy a unique experience: admiring the sunrise from the top of the mountain. The rising sun slowly illuminates the surrounding landscape, giving plays of light and colors that make this moment unforgettable.

Flora and Fauna: A Heritage to Discover

La Montaña Roja is not only a destination for hikers, but also a natural sanctuary. Among its slopes it is possible to spot the Hubara Canaria, a rare bird endemic to the Canary Islands. In addition, the vegetation is equally interesting, with unique species such as Matamoro and Uvilla, plants that have adapted to the island’s arid climate.

Curiosities and History

La Montaña Roja owes its name to its characteristic reddish hues, due to the volcanic composition of the soil. This place, in addition to being a natural attraction, also has cultural significance for the inhabitants of the island.

In the past, the area around the mountain was used for grazing goats, a practice that helped shape the landscape and preserve local biodiversity. Today, it is a symbol of balance between nature and history, representing the essence of Fuerteventura.

If you want to explore the Montaña Roja, here are some useful tips:
